How to Maintain Residential Door Locks

residential door locksHow to Properly Maintain Your Residential Door Locks

The locks on your doors play a vital role in keeping your belongings safe and secure; therefore, it’s necessary to maintain them regularly.

Consider that they protect you against burglary, and add aesthetic value to your door.

Therefore, it is critical that every homeowner learns how to take good care of their house door locks. In this article, we feature important tips for keeping your house locks in good shape. Keep reading to find out.

  1. Make Sure that the Door Hangs Properly

The lock will perform well only if the door is hung properly. A door that is properly prepared for the lock is the bottom-line for a lasting door. If the door sags or binds, it will place a huge amount of pressure on the lock bolt and the latch.

This might lead to a failure of the lock in the near future. Therefore, contact a qualified locksmith to make sure your house door hangs properly and lends appropriate space to your locks.

  1. Check the Door Screws and the Strike Plates

Does the screw that secures the top hinge to the doorframe connect the door to the wall framing appropriately? At least one of the screws on the top hinge should be long enough to connect the door to the wall framing.

This will keep the door from sagging and increases the break-in resistance. It is also an important undertaking to help protect the door locks.

  1. Are the Deadlatch and Deadbolt Working Appropriately?

When the door is closed, the deadlatch should fall on the strike plate. This feature is important in modern entry locks and they function correctly only when there is proper alignment to the strike plate.

  1. Clean and Lubricate the Door Locks Regularly

The door locks require regular cleaning to function appropriately. Use a mild detergent when cleaning the locks.

It is also important that you contact a qualified locksmith for door locks cleaning and lubrication as well. Cleaning and lubricating are the most overlooked door lock maintenance practices.

Maintain your Residential Door Locks with Quick Locksmith

Through the above good practices, you can rest assured that your residential door locks will work properly. Contact Quick Locksmith today for the best residential door locks maintenance.

The 7 Best Services of an Automotive Locksmith

automotive locksmithThe 7 Best Services You Can Get From an Automotive Locksmith in Los Angeles

We all underestimate just how vulnerable we are on the road today, especially in Los Angeles.

More people are locking themselves out of their cars than ever before in history, but not in the way you think. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), in 2015,  there were 57,096 crimes reported where the assailant had stolen the car with the key FOB left inside. Imagine how many more thefts have happened while the car was actually locked.

Fortunately, you can always contact an Automotive Locksmith if you find yourself in this unlikely scenario. These people are locksmiths that specialize in automotive services such as lockouts, broken key extractions, car key replacements, etc. All you have to do is call them (most of them work in the local area) and they will come to your location and get you back on the road before you have time to think to yourself ‘wow, that was fast!’

Conversely, we understand that there are dozens of services an Automotive Locksmith offers, and many of them are equally as important as the ones on this list, if not more. However, we believe that the following services lay the foundation for automotive locksmith services because each service helps the customer immensely. Here are 7 of the best services an Automotive Locksmith can help you with in Los Angeles.

  1. 24-hour Car Lockout

    • This is one of the most common service calls an automotive locksmith gets. After answering the service call, a dispatcher will find the nearest locksmith to send to the local West LA area. The locksmith will then reach out to you in 20 minutes or less and get you back in your vehicle in just a matter of minutes.
  2. Broken Key Extraction

    • It is absolutely horrible to have a key break on you when you want to start or turn off your car. Thankfully, there is a service that deals with these moments. An Automotive Locksmith will come prepared with the proper extraction tools to wring that sucker out in no time.
  3. Key Ignition Repair / Installation

    • Sometimes, the key will turn in the ignition, but the car won’t start for some reason. In these cases, you will want an Automotive Locksmith to come and take a look at the situation. It could be that the steering wheel is locked, or that there is debris or lint in the cylinder. Whatever the issue is, the technician will diagnose the situation quickly and use the proper tools to fix your vehicle. Therefore, it is advisable to refrain from extracting the key yourself to avoid further damage and expenses.
  4. Car Key Replacement

    • If the key does end up breaking in the cylinder, you will need a replacement immediately. While certain newer keys do take longer to make, such as car key fobs, Automotive Locksmiths will replace most car keys onsite for much less money than a dealer would charge.
  5. Transponder Key Reprogramming

    • Sometimes, the transponder in your key will stop communicating with your car’s computer correctly. In those instances, an Automotive Locksmith can take the key to his van and reprogram it for a fraction of what it would cost you at the dealer.
  6. Door Lock Repair / Change

    • Automotive Locksmiths can repair your car door lock if the key keeps turning. Or, they can change the lock out completely if necessary.
  7. Gas / Oil Delivery

    • In rare cases, you may not have any fuel left while also being locked out of your car. As a professional courtesy, an Automotive Locksmith can give you a spare gallon of gasoline or oil from his van to get you back on the road again.

Whether you are locked out of your car or just need someone to fix your door lock fast, you’ll want to consult an Automotive Locksmith immediately. They are well trained at handling emergency vehicle situations where drivers are unable to access their car on the road. Just remember to do your research and find a company that balances price with quality of service.

4 Signs That You Should Change the Locks on Your Door

change door locks4 Signs That Suggest You Should Change Door Locks Right Away

Locks on residential, commercial and automotive doors are intended to safeguard the property from theft and burglary. It is therefore important that you ensure these locks are in peak functioning condition.

In this article, we enlighten you on some of the signs that indicate you should change the locks. Here are the top signs that you should consider hiring a professional locksmith in Los Angeles to offer you a lock change.

  1. You are Experiencing Difficulties Unlocking or Locking the Locks

When you begin experiencing difficulties opening or locking the locks, this is a top sign that it’s time you consider a lock change. The locks that seem difficult to unlock are almost worn out and a security risk you ought to look at immediately.

Often, it is because of rust or corrosion on the lock pins and hence, it becomes a lot harder when you are locking the door. Soon, the parts with rust will begin to fall apart and expose you to the danger of burglary in your own business, residential property or vehicle.

When the locks begin to have difficulties while unlocking, it means that the locks will soon jam and you will be locked out. To avoid these two scenarios of burglary or lock out from occurring, consider a professional lock change.

  1. Misplaced Keys

When you or one of your employees misplace the keys to the main office door, consider changing the locks immediately. This is a serious security threat that might lead to loss of business documents or other valuable assets.

The same applies when you have lost the house keys. You never know who might pick up the keys. So long as you have misplaced the keys, it is important that there is a replacement of locks done as soon as possible.

  1. In Case of a Burglary

Whenever you have experienced a burglary, whether a successful incident or a failed attempt. You need to consider changing the locks to your business door, the residential door or even the car door. The criminals might be planning a comeback, so to avoid loss of property, make sure you change door locks asap.

  1. A Disgruntled Employee Has Resigned

Although it’s advisable you change the locks after employees have left, in some instances you might not have to. However, one scenario where you shouldn’t even think of leaving the locks unchanged is in the case of a disgruntled employee who has left your office. Make sure you change door locks under such a circumstance as you never know if the employee could return hostile.

Consider hiring a Professional Locksmith

The sooner you change that lock, the quicker you’ll have peace of mind about the whole thing. If you don’t know a whole lot about locks or how to properly install them, contact Quick Safe and Keys Services Los Angeles today. We can change your lock and replace it for you the same day so you save time and money.

Keypad System Perks  (323) 275-9246keypad systems (323) 275-9246

Keyless Locks

Tired of losing your keys or getting locked out of your house or business? With today’s fast paced life, nobody has time to look around for lost keys which most likely you wont find then and there. This is why most business/home owners have switched over to a keypad system. You can’t duplicate a keypad system like you can with a regular lock and key. For instance, an ex-employee, friend, or relative who no longer needs access to your home or business, can easily make a copy of the key without anybody having to know. In such situations, you will have to go through a whole new process of changing or rekeying all over again. This is where keypad systems come into place.

  • Do you want to operate the door with a remote control? And if so, how many?
  • Do you want it to run electrical or battery powered?
  • Are some doors for customers/employees only?
  • Check the doors. Are they made of wood, steel, aluminum, or glass?
  • Are they designated as fire doors?
  • Any garage doors or parking lot gates to control?

  • A keypad system is a simple security system that does not require keys. It just uses a simple access code that usually pertains a 4 to 6-digit code containing numbers/letters resembling a phone.
  • Furthermore, keypad locks are available as individual locks or larger security systems for residences and businesses.
  • The neat thing about it is that once the code is inserted correctly, it will make some type of noise. Thereby indicating that you can open the door.
  • There are no restrictions as to how many times you can change your access code. Although some keypad locks vary on the way you can change your code.
  • Larger installations may include more than one site.
  • An access control system that can be operated over a network. This lets you manage the security at all your locations from a central point.
  • Using a key fob transmitter for remote control access to your home. This introduces a whole new dimension to your home security system.
  • Additionally, you can unlock the door and turn on the porch lights as you walk up the pathway or pull up into the driveway.
  • For a minor investment of around $100, you can provide a security feature for your loved ones; that is priceless.
  • You can also add voice activation to your key system.
  • Individual locks contain all of the hardware and controls of the lock in a single unit while larger locks draw power from anywhere in the building/house.
  • Regardless of whether the lock is part of a security system or not. The actual lock mechanism works by needing a small electrical current to release the lock bolt.
  • Whatever type of door you’re looking to automate, there is a solution for you.

Choose your Keypad:

Keypads can vary greatly. Some have a key pad with small selection of numbers/letters. Others have a full 12- button keypad similar to those found on phones. When the code is entered incorrectly, it will prevent the door from unlocking for 15 minutes. When the lock is entered correctly, a tone or other sound indicates that the lock has been disengaged.

Changing Codes:

For security, keypad locks allow users to change the codes used to unlock them to new codes of their choosing. The method by which codes are changed depends upon the lock manufacturer and whether the lock is a stand-alone model. Or if it’s part of a larger security system. You can change the keypad lock as many times as you’d like, there are no restrictions.

Powering Locks:

Since keypads require power to operate having a power source available is very important. Individual locks that are not part of a larger system often use standard batteries as a power source and must be changed periodically to ensure continued operation. Some large security systems often draw their power from the security itself. Although some may use batteries as a back up power source. They designed the locks so that disabling their power source does not open them; without power they remain locked.

Keypad Systems by Quick Locksmith

If you’re in the market for a new keypad system, you’re in luck because Quick Locksmith has many systems in stock that can keep your house safe and secure. Our technicians can install them for you the same day you call in, and we guarantee 100% satisfaction every time.

Rekey ServiceMost people have no idea what rekeying is, let alone a tumbler lock. In fact, they will often change the lock instead because they simply don’t know that a rekeying service exists. Now, rekeying a lock has a few benefits to it.

In plain English, you get to keep the lock, but the key you used to use will no longer work on it anymore. That way, you get to keep your lock’s look while securing your home or apartment at the same time. Therefore, you can change the tumbler lock yourself using these three simple steps.

Rekeying process

Rekeying your locks from time to time, such as your front door, gives you great protection against burglars or robbers. It involves removing the lock cylinder from the knob or deadbolt and replacing the pins inside with a different set. The procedure for removing the cylinder varies according to the type of lock you’re working on, and it sometimes requires special tools. First, remove the doorknob or deadbolt from the door to access the lock cylinder. In most cases, you can do this by removing the decorations around the door with a screwdriver. Once it comes off, insert the control key and turn it 90 degrees to take out the lock cylinder.

Extracting the lock

Once you’ve extracted the lock cylinder from the knob, if you’re working with a deadbolt lock, simply slide the cylinder out. If you’re working with a doorknob or lever, you need to perform a few simple operations with a cylinder removal tool.
Turn the lock cylinder over and hook the small end of the cylinder removal tool on the C ring and pry it off. If you don’t have a cylinder removal tool, you can do this with a small screwdriver.

Removing the plug

Next, you’ll want to remove the plug from the cylinder. Place the follower against the back of the plug and push. The plug comes out the front while the follower remains in the cavity.
Turn the plug upside down to remove the old tumblers. Use a key gauge to determine which plugs you should use to replace them. Divide the key into five or six sections, depending on the lock and measure the height of each section with the gauge. You then choose the correct plug for each section from a color-coded assortment.
Once you’ve chosen the plug, drop the new tumblers into the holes in the plug, and then reinsert the plug into the cylinder. Remove the follower. Reset the C-clip on the back of the cylinder with needle-nose pliers.
Finally, test the key before you reassemble the lock or doorknob.
